OIA process

OIA process

  • Empathy for the public servants trying to answer these
  • "Commercial sensitivity" used as an excuse to not release information - we want to know how much government spends on specific things
  • Private-Public-Partnerships muddy the waters of "commercial sensitivity"
  • All contracts that government has should be publicly available
  • OIA process needs to scale. Look at a different model
  • Information should be made available by default (open 1st). It should be ubiquitously available, but needs to be 'utilisable', or usable by the average person.
  • Help people to use and explore open information and data by providing tools

Why the contribution is important

NetHui is New Zealand’s most diverse and interactive Internet community event and the event held in Auckland on the 9-10th November 2017 had the themes themes of ‘trust’ and ‘freedom’. Participants were challenged, “With a new Government being sworn in this week how will the political changes signalled by the parties now in Government affect trust and freedom issues?" The session on Open Government Partnership asked how attendees can get involved and what the big open government issues are for them and New Zealand. They were then asked to come up with ideas for the next National Action Plan.

Agree. I would add that the OIA should be extended to include private third parties that deliver public services that are legislated such as SERCO's operation of public prisons and the various parts of the health sector that are run by private companies.
