Expand the coverage of the OIA and LGOIMA

Establish a working party to review the schedules to the Official Information Act 1982 and Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 and other relevant legislation to ensure that all agencies which should be within the scope of the legislation are included.

Why the contribution is important

While most government and local authority agencies are within the scope of the Official Information Act 1982 and Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987, some are not. The Law Commission's 2012 review of the Official Information Act ("The Public's Right to Know", R125) identified several discrepencies, including various boards, local-authority owned port companies, and crown-owned companies such as Air New Zealand. It recommended a thorough review of the schedules and exemptions to the OIA and LGOIMA to ensure consistency and ensure that all appropriate agencies were included.

The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the OIA and should be responsible for this commitment.
