Declaration on Political Finance Openness
NZ government should sign up to the International Declaration on Political Finance Openness
Why the contribution is important
Political finance is one of the most controversial topics in New Zealand. The 2016 Trust survey from IGPS showed that 5% of people do not trust the way parties are funded. there are repeated quesitons in Parliament about honours and there is a huge lack of transparency aorund institutions such as the Cabunet Club.
Furthermore just last year a new offence of Trading in Influence was created (105F Crimes Act) which can impact on political party finance both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Signing the declaration is an easy way to launch a reasonabel debate about how best we bring transparency into this arena. It is not about trying to expose any problems, but simply showing some commitment to making our system as openly democratic as possible. Hopeuflly it would begin to restir trust as well.
