Adopt the International Open Data Charter

That the New Zealand Government and Local Government NZ adopt the International Open Data Charter.

As detailed here

this involves designating a ministry, department or agency responsible for its oversight and implementation, and establishing delivery mechanisms with timebound and verifiable actions.

Why the contribution is important

This charter is more robust than the current New Zealand Data Information and Management Principles, particularly in its emphasis on ensuring strong citizen engagement with open data, and consultation processes on prioritization of data release. It further states that "anticorruption information is released as open data" and that proactive information release should be aligned with government obligations to release data on request. The process of adopting this charter would be an excellent framework under which many of the more specific Open Government commitments suggested for our National Action Plan could fall.
