Greater local government accountability

Amend the Local Government Act 2002 to ensure increased local government accountability so that it matches the degree of accountability of central government. Corruption is thankfully still fairly rare in New Zealand but when it does happen, it's often at the local government level.

Concrete suggestions include:

1. Requiring periodic risk based audits of local government accounts, including procurement.

2. Give the Ombudsman greater teeth against local council breaches.

3. Establishing a specialised local government tribunal with exclusive jurisdiction to hear claims against local councils (akin to Disputes Tribunals).

Why the contribution is important

Local government currently lacks sufficient transparency in how they operate.
