No for-profit organisation ought to be making political advertisements

The cannabis referendum failed partially due to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of misinformation being pumped into New Zealanders at the expense of overseas groups who were decidedly not neutral parties. This is bloody cooked in my opinion and shouldn't be permitted.

Why the contribution is important

Ant referendum should be preceded by a reference panel of citizens selected by civic lottery to represent the public at large. The panel should be tasked with considering the evidence from stakeholders, experts and other interested parties, and should then, as representatives of the public at large, come up with a recommendation, with reasons, of which way the referendum should go. Then at least there would be a considered, non-partisan, guide from "people like us" to what the public might be thinking. The fact that the panel is considering the issue, and the results, should be widely publicised by authority. It would probably be difficult to ban biassed opinions and misinformation, but at least there would be a considered and deliberative public response available.
